Christ Candle Advent Prayer

The Four Names of Isaiah 9

Father God,

Who resides in heaven

And, by thy Word of power, upholds all creation

Grant us insight into that which

We congregate here to celebrate:

The baby, lying in manger

God the Son giving himself up

to be born a helpless son in the fallen creation

He himself cursed after the notorious temptation

Let us not follow the flow of the creed

And pass over the middle

But saturate ourselves with every deed and instance

That was necessary for our glorious inheritance

Wonderful miracles:

The dead were raised,

the lame walked,

the Gentiles genuinely praised,

Muddy spit cured the blind,

Water was turned to much wine,

Words uttered with the force of thunder

That could only be spoken by a divine Counselor

Mighty deeds:

The demons obeyed his every word,

Creation was bent to his whim,

He left his own disciples in derision,

The entire Old Covenant was fulfilled in him

He put the religious leaders in a state of mass confusion,

He flipped their tables and,

flung their furniture down the temple steps,

Only those who could interpret the parables knew to call him God

Everlasting Word he was, is, and will be

The exegesis of the Trinity from eternity,

Commissioned to redeem and transform all creation,

To kill the dragon

And follow the will of God the Father

Prince of this world, He cast out

Reminding his children O’ little faith

To doubt the fiery doubts

Because the King has given the captives release

And gifted them eternal Peace

Seemingly helpless was this baby in a manger,

As that of a lamb,

but this lion is anything but tame

Eternally the same

The most dangerous man ever on this earth

Was conceived and born through the virgin birth
